Grounds Committee Achievements
2002-2003
The Grounds Committee's active members Tom Glenn and Ann Wing (co chairs), Ferd Lazarus and Anne Mehl met monthly.
The 2002-2003 budget year was a successful one. We oversaw the completion of three major landscaping projects, spread wood chips in three areas areas plagued with drainage problems, and worked with a half-dozen contractors for current and future projects. Much of the time-consuming work was completed with no cost to the community. Specifically we:
Planned and organized the construction of a drainage system, walkway, and plantings at both the north end of Building 4. beside and behind 7479 Swan Point Way, and at the southern end of Building 15, next to 7291 Swan Point Way.
Spread wood chips: behind building 19; on the muddy path between buildings 4 and 5 (continuing behind Building 4 to include the bare areas there); and in the bare central area of the large court. The last two areas were mulched by members of the committee with chips created from Barlett's annual tree pruning at no cost to the community.
Had steps installed beside and behind 7479 Swan Point Way to stop erosion there.
Had entrance sprinklers replaced with a drip irrigation system to save water.
Coordinated mulching, shrub pruning, overseeding and tree trimming throughout the neighborhood.
Worked with residents' suggesting and helping plant shrubs, trees, and flowers.
Sent thank-you certificates to residents whose gardening efforts were noteworthy.
Devised a plan, which will be implemented this Fall, for planting new trees and shrubs. Most of these will flower and many are native to the area.
Investigated the continuing presence of blue pipes behind Unit 19 in preparation for additional landscaping there.
In addition, members of the committee spent countless hours working with vendors (Bartlett, McFall&Berry, Property Care, Better Gardens by Todd, Sun Nurseries, and Outdoor Architects) and many more hours fruitlessly investigating alternative vendors. The committee performed at least three walk-throughs of the entire community and met many times at sites needing attention. Members also met for regular discussions, attended board meetings, and drowned one another in e-mails, phone calls, and notes.
Looking back, we feel proud of our achievements. If you would like to join us, or have ideas and comments please talk to one of us or visit contact section of our website for e-mail.
